ACADEMY SPORTS + OUTDOORS TEXAS BOWL

ACADEMY SPORTS + OUTDOORS TEXAS BOWL

They say everything is bigger in Texas. Perhaps they are right. The Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl aims to prove that theory right by creating a “celebration of the culture, heritage and football tradition of the Lone Star State.” The vision of the The Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl is to “create a thrilling fan experience, deliver a memorable conference, school and athlete experience, positively impact [the] charity partner and establish Houston as one of the great bowl cities in America.” The impact that the bowl game has had on Houston is a Texas-sized impact. The bowl game has generated nearly $50,000,000 and donated more than $850,000 to the DePelchin Children’s Center. The The Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl reflects the statement “everything is bigger in Texas,” and puts strong emphasis on making a difference in the Houston community — a difference that is unquestionably BIGGER THAN THE GAME.

MORE
  • In five of the eight years of its existence, the The Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl has welcomed a homestate team. Rutgers beat Kansas State 37-10 in 2006 in the inaugural game, and the only other games that haven’t featured a Texas team came in 2009 when Navy beat Missouri 35-13 and last year when Syracuse beat Minnesota 21-17.
  • In fact, two teams from the same state squared off in the bowl’s second game in 2007, when TCU beat the hometown Houston Cougars 20-13. That was the last bowl game to match two teams from the same state until 2013 when Louisiana-Lafayette beat Tulane in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
